The best unusual watches

Here is my list of the most interesting, but unusual and non-mainstream wrist watches.

1. Tokyoflash. Very Asian-ish in good meaning, in the ~$100-150 range. Not much of them can be worn by someone who likes Omega or Rado and it looks like they're a little bit more about design, than functionality.
2. Mr Jones. Funny design for ~$150. Nice thing to give as a present, but I don't see myself buying them.
   
3. Diesel. I'm not so about Diesel timepieces, but I am very excited about their Frankenwatch. It averages about ~$220, and the design is really nice. I don't think that you're buying anything else, but the creative work, but it worths it (well, maybe a little less :).
4. Haffstreuner. Little known german brand that idiolizes a nice industrial design. Some nice models can be found for as less as ~$200-260.
   
5. Nooka. Averaged ~$250, pretty known nowadays, however, to my mind are mostly styled for women.
6. Retrowerk. Priced about ~$450 is a little bit high, but they are extremely nice designed.

Need to do some homework and choose a right one for myself.

Also, one can hardly argue with the price and value combination of Seik0 5, which can be bought for less then $80, but still is very nice timepiece.

On the other note, I'm currently looking for a nice bakery in the Bay area. I've tried Dianda's Italian Bakery today, which is in San Mateo. Well, it's so expensive and really nothing interesting comparing to either Karina's Cake House or Flor De Cafe in Glendale. I'll keep looking though.

My PMP exam

I don't know why I didn't blog about it before, so here is the story:

I passed the exam with success about a year ago (March 2008). The preparation process took me about 2 to 3 months. I can't say that it was very intensive, but I had a pretty solid plan and schedule and invested not less then an hour every day (with some very rare exceptions).

The whole exam-time starting from entering testing facilities and finishing with printed and stamped results took me around 2.15 hrs. PMI doesn't disclose the scores now (at least they did not that time), but gives you rating (below proficient, moderate proficient and proficient) for each of knowledge areas (plus professional responsibility). I've screwed up on one, everything else was rated as proficient.

Speaking about the preparation process. I've used three books, Andy Crowe's one, PMP Head First, and Rita's. I also have used a bunch of notes and spent a lot of time on solving exams. I believe I've solved more then 1,000 questions, plus the ones which come with every book. I didn't like Rita's book at all. This is no way one can use it to learn something. She is bringing complexities to the things that should be easy and intuitive to any manager. I didn't like her practice questions as well. She make them extremely weird and they are far from what you'll get.

PMP Head First book is very nice to read and understand. I believe that this is a best starters book, but you'll need something to add to it for details. This one book might be not enough. The questions which are in the book are simple, the "last exam" questions which come as download are very good.

Crowe's book is the best one to use with PMP Head First. The questions are good. The material is good. The way of depicting information is good. Overall, this is the best book. The questions are good for concept, but not complex enough to rely for passing an exam.

As for the sample questions, the best are PM Studies and Oliver Lehmann's. The downloadable PMP Head First are also very good. Andy Crowe book questions are good as well.

No surprises, although I had a few questions with English words I wasn't aware of. They were tough even to guess. English is not my native language and I speak three languages actually (Russian, Ukrainian and English). I didn't placed a request for translation (they gave me this option during the exam scheduling) because the translations will use different terminology and they are more confusing then helpful.

As far as I remember I didn't have any network diagram question at all. But I had a bunch of EV calculations. A lot of people are receiving NPV v. EPV question nowadays. I did, too.

No surprises at the test site. I was passing in Glendale, CA (LA county). They have a lock box for you, but they are very strict and force to take off even watches. They gave a simple calculator, although the program has a Calculator button on screen and you can use it as well. The class is not that noisy, but it really interrupts you when somebody new is coming into the class to take a seat. They have a video and audio recording of that quality that they hear even when you start writing on the scratch paper.

Basically, that's all I can remember. ;) Feel free to ask me more questions, but I can't disclose the actual questions (and no PMP should).

Погодные "ужосы"

Терпеть не могу прогнозы погоды. Как только я ими заинтересуюсь, они полностью портят мне все планы, и в итоге - не сбываются.

После многомесячных заездов по горам, лесам и полям, машина превратилась в совершенно нелепое пятно, мимо которого невозможно даже пройти, не измаравшись. В связи с чем неделю назад я устроил капитальную мойку. Загнал на автоматическую мойку чтобы сбить куски грязи, после чего поехал на нормальную и полностью ручную (!!) мойку, чтобы ее помыли по-человечески.

Ручная мойка по большому счету это великая редкость здесь, в Южной Калифорнии. Люди, как натренированное стадо, пользуются убогими автоматическими мойками, чаще всего оборудованными препаршивейшими машинами, и совершенно безчувственными (а иногда, такое ощущение что и слепыми) иммигрантами (граничащими с нелегалами). Ручная мойка зачастую значит тот же автоматический портал, только с одним-двумя рабами, которые будут бежать за твоей машиной и подтирать пятнышки после автомата.

Сразу сделаю небольшое отступление по поводу иммигрантов, как таковых. Как многие из вас могут догадаться, я тоже не коренной американец, которым никогда и не хотел стать. И очень рад что мой сын также родился не в США. Однако я тут, что говорит о том, что мне здесь легче, лучше, удобнее, больше нравится (подчеркните нужное), чем там. С другой стороны, я не могу понять тех людей которые а) нелегально занырнули в эту страну, надеясь на лучшую жизнь, чем оставаться в своей стране, и б) добились легальной иммиграции и построили образ жизни на социальных пособиях или работе на мойках. По моему мнению, ни одна страна мира не стоит этого, где бы вы не родились. Унижаться и быть униженным можно и у себя дома. По-крайней мере, сделайте это гордо, раз это то, ради чего вы родились. (В каждом правиле есть исключения, да и не мне судить.)

Люди в Южной Калифорнии не знают что такое мойка. Откуда им знать, когда они не знают что такое пыль, снег, грязь, слякоть, куски говна, вылетающие из под колес других машин и просто стаи птиц и другой нечисти, обсырающие твою машину с утра до вечера. Другими словами - они не знают ничего и поэтому радуются 15-ти секундному заезду машины в моечный портал как великому благу. (Должен сказать что я качественно выделялся на фоне других, когда заехал на мойку. Когда спросили откуда я, то-есть из Украины, уточнили - ехал ли я оттуда на машине.)

Так вот, после того как моя машина, блестящая на солнце, вернулась с мойки, в Pasadena наступил сезон заливных дождей, который продолжался почти неделю. По моим первоначальным планам, я собирался на этой неделе отправить машину на генеральную чистку "внутри", то-есть вышампунить и выдраить все кресла и матерчатые точки в салоне, а также отмытья, отполировать и набриолинить все панели для долгих минут чистой радости. (Это удовольствие здесь, к сожалению, достаточно дорогое - около $80, если повезет.)

Все это было сделано на фоне того, что я наконец нашел единственно правильную мойку, которая мало того что полностью ручная, так еще и недорогая - JJ's Hand Car Wash в Eagle Rock, CA (почти посередине между Pasadena и Glendale).

Пару дней назад, под звуки очередного затяжного дождя, я взглянул на прогноз, и был раздосадован. Дожди были обещаны на ближайшие дней 5-7, без малейшего прояснения. Пришлось отказаться от планов на мойку и блестящую машину в ближайшее время.

Что хочу сказать. Весь день светит солнце, температура порядка 60F (почти +16C), нет намека на дождь, а машина так и осталось немытой.
