Apple wants Dropbox
A yet to be confirmed rumour indicates that Apple had offered to buy Dropbox for $800 million but the increasingly popular startup has declined the offer.

That would make perfect sense, and I would love to see this acquisition passing through, however, bearing in mind multiple billion valuation, $800 million offer makes very little sense.
P.S. I don't think that multiple billion valuation makes sense either.

Troubleshooting unlocked & jailbroken iPhone 4
For those who haven't tried yet. Jailbreak worked flawlessly on my iPhone 4. Unlock was relatively easy, too. http://www.techrockstar.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/broken-iphone-sl.jpg I also installed MyWi 4 (the major reason for actually jailbreaking my iPhone, I really need a device to tether on the way) and My3G. Besides, I've installed Open SSH server and SB Setting, to be able to turn the SSH server off. After that, problems started to appear. The biggest one was FaceTime turned off and not being able to turn on. It actually started to send freaking short messages to some +44 number (I guess I'd be quite upset with upcoming AT&T bill), and I started to receive some replies back. Installing iPhone Delivery (which was recommended to early users of jailbreak) didn't solve the problem. I stopped receiving replies (although, I'm not sure I'm not billed for them :), but FaceTime failed to activate. Uninstalling My3G did the trick. Easily activated FaceTime after that, and it started to work well. Reinstalling My3G after, kept FaceTime activated, but every time I tried to connect thru FaceTime it was failing. So, I'm ending up with no My3G, which makes the overall experience less exciting, but I hope this problem can be solved soon.

Apple is pro-active on repairing laptops
To my greatest surprise, I've checked the repair status on laptop and figured out that it was fixed and about to be shipped back.
However, what was my surprise about, is that it was fixed *tomorrow*. :)

You can't love iPhone more than this guy

Witter chased after them, dropped to one knee outside the store, pulled out a five-shot Smith & Wesson .38-caliber revolver, and fired at the front tire of the getaway car. The car swerved, Witter fired again, and missed again.
He is a tough guy. Imagine what happens when somebody looks at his Mac screen in the coffee shop.

Фото и прочее
В этот самый момент сижу и закачиваю фото из iPhoto в мой Flickr, за который я не пожалел двадцати с чем-то долларов в год.Удовольствие в этом крайне сомнительное. Уже залил больше 5К фото, когда понял что осталось тоже больше 5К.
И это не считая нескольких дисков (пары-тройки DVD) которые раскиданы где не попадя, и имеют много исторических фото до 2006 года. Мак у меня появился только в с апреля 2006, до этого времени все фото аккуратненькими файлами складывались на CD-R.
Но самое неприятно даже не медлительность процесса, а я его проблемность. Заметил неприятную особенность. Когда начинаю заливать большие файлы (Flickr, YouTube, Rapidshare и прочее гавно), а также когда в принципе долго заливаю — у меня все сдыхается, и по 80 порту идут connection timeout. Однако же почту удивительным образом читать могу, большинство IM запущенных работает (остальные походу может никогда и не работали), даже P2P может самоотверженно продолжаться. 80-ый порт однако же предательски молчит.
Помогает в этих случаях рестарт WiFi роутера. Причем рестарт типа — ну-ка попроси снова IP у DSL роутера (соединение держится на DSL коробочке). У меня старенький Belkin F5D8230-4, хотя исключительным гавном такое не назвать — гораздо хуже в промышленных масштабах.
Вопрос — что за гавно имеет место быть? Пенять на глюкавость роутера, неправильный MTU или плохую погоду — как-то некошерно. Хотя Apple Airport Express в wishlist добавил. Буду искать подвох - поиграюсь с VPN и какими-нибудь левыми проксиками на чужих портах.

I've got a new MacBook Pro today
I've got a new MacBook Pro today. It's MB470LL/A model, pretty basic one. And I run Xbench test on it. It was interesting on is it better or still the same. Well, guess what.
I didn't expect it to be something super powerful, and actually it never was. ;)
I had a chance to compare it to my old MacBook Pro, one of the first models sold in March 2006. I also worked for a few days on MacBook Air, the first generation model (which doesn't make it less attractive, though. ;)
I got a really good deal on my MBP, so there is nothing I can complain about. Besides, having no SuperDrive, only USB Ethernet, only one USB and no Firewire on-board, could bring to my life less happiness than I got with MBP. However, the MBA was for me something really interesting and worth-while upgrading. The MBP became for me just a better thing to keep my things running on.
Seriously, if you're thinking about getting a new Mac, think about getting MBA (mean, MacBook Air).
P.S. Why, the hell, they changed Firewire port again? I've got buy a new set of cables now for my camcorder and external drive. This sucks.

Considering new laptop
While considering new laptop, I run xbench on my almost 3 years old MacBook Pro against half a year old MacBook Air (the one that belongs to my wife). While a lot of people think that xbench can't be used as accurate comparison test for computers, something is better than nothing.
So here comes the data side-by-side.
As you can see, the overall score for MacBook Air is about 2 times less then for my MBP.
Going into details, the CPU scores are pretty close to each other. I don't know why but it could be that 1.6 Core2 Duo is running much alike 2.0 Core Duo. Memory test is also pretty much the same.
Graphics really sucks on MacBook Air. Especially, when it comes to OpenGL.
One of the biggest surprises was that disks are running pretty much the same, however, my MacBook Pro was supposed to be 5400rpm vs 4200rpm on MacBook Air.
Keeping in mind that market price for my MacBook Pro is about $1,000 off the craigslist, and one can grab a sealed first generation MacBook Air for as low as $1,150 (add taxes, AppleCare and other shit and it will grow upto $1,500), the price difference of $500 could be a good bargain for getting 3 years hassle-free laptop. However, you should be ready to depart with all-in-one laptop, loosing bigger 15.4" vs 13.3" screen (not a big issue for me though), Firewire port and integrated SuperDrive (that's basically all that I'm really using). The gain is lighter weight, slimmer and fancier toy. ;)
So does it really worth it? I don't know. I'm still looking for aftermarket few months old aluminium MacBook Pro's, which are priced around $1,800-1,900 off the craigslist (no taxes, but add extra $250 for AppleCare). The upgrade cost is raising two times up though.
I'm missing old good days having few more years on AppleCare and caring less about what I'm working on. ;)

Few bad things
Few bad things happened today. Well, everything started with a good thing. Apple service center (in Texas) has received my laptop, fixed it (replaced a lot of things), and sent it back. And all that was yesterday, within one day. Today, I've received a call from Apple store, telling me that I can come and pick up the laptop. That was really fast and really cool.
However, when I got home and turned it on I discovered a few, but pretty unpleasant things. The display case, when the lid is closed, in deformed and bent from one side. Not a major problem, just a few millimeters, but, damn, that was something I didn't order.
The other thing was that my display started to blink (flash), like it could not hold a brightness level. I've tried to play a little bit with brightness and it got pretty stable, however, still a pretty unpleasant thing (and a work-stopper! nobody who has got eyes should ever work on a blinking screen intentionally ;).
The last thing is over heating. The laptop got very very hot in the area between the keyboard and display (a small area about few centimeters wide) during 10 or 15 minutes. It was so hot, that I didn't feel safe when putting a finger on it. Well, I know MacBook Pro's are pretty hot things, but not that much. I had it for more then a year, so I can compare it to real thing.
Well, I came back to Apple store and told them about my problems. So, guess what, they told me to leave a laptop for one week more.What the fuck. I mean, this really sucks. While I am very satisfied with their attitude and willingness to fix things, and do this fast, I am extremely disappointed about staying without the laptop for two weeks. I also don't like the fact that I didn't have these problems before. This is something that should never happen.
AppleCare looks to be a good service, but not that good on quality control though. Hopefully, they can solve my problem pretty fast.

Quicken for Mac v. ?
Being out of my laptop and out of my normal work place, I just realized that I'll also miss the Mac Quicken. I'm using it pretty often for keeping my budget on track.
Today, as I realized that I have nothing now, I started to revise the available online alternatives. Well, as I started with looking for a free ones, I ended up with mint.com and expensr.com. Few minutes later, I sadly found out that mint.com is aiming very different target then Quicken. The expensr.com is somewhat closer, however, I still didn't find it to be useful as much as Quicken.
It looks to me that the accounting software needs to stay desktop application. However, it would be a terrific idea to be able to sync the online and offline versions of Quicken, so I could use Quicken for basic operations online, and still keep my desktop version for full features.
It's sad that Intuit decided to keep Online Quicken as a separate product, that is not sync'ed and not connected with desktop ones. I would be happy to pay an extra few bucks for that.

Damn, I need a backup laptop
Yesterday my MacBook Pro has gone for repair to Apple. I had a long list of concerns and guy at Genius bar was very patient listening to them and listing all of them for recommended repair.
The worse thing of AppleCare is that they do not provide a replacement laptop. Well, they provide a loan program for iPhone when you're sending yours for repair, so what about the laptop? It's way more important then some cell phone. I have a few spare cell phones at home so I can live perfectly well if I'd ever have to send my iPhone for repair. But I don't have any extra laptops. Hopefully the guys at Apple's repair center would be fast enough, because I miss my laptop a lot.
My friends gave to me an old Dell Inspiron B130. And it'd be great if the cooling fan of it would work. It does not. It freezes the laptop every 5-10 minutes and this is really not a thing I can use as a laptop. :( So I have to share the laptop with my wife and this makes both of us pretty unhappy. ;)

iTunes CyrFix
For those who missed the release of iTunes CyrFix, here is the link back to it http://prokhorenko.us/itunescyrfix/. That page is completely in Russian. However, I doubt this is a problem. Otherwise, why do you need Cyrillic support then? ;)
The code has got some issues and might not work for all "problematic" names in your iTunes. But I found it to be usefull in the most cases for myself. Hopefully, you'll find it useful, too. ;)

iPhone pseudo-GPS code (iLoJack)

Yes, it works. ;) There were some issues, but I'll give you a chance to discover them and fix yourself. ;)
I've developed a simple wrapper to run the Erica Sadun's findme-muchbetter to get the location of the phone and send it to Twitter. Also, it uses Erica's pingwifi, however, I didn't find this to be useful for myself (and my iPhone).
Your iPhone has got to be jailbroken and should be running a decent software update. I don't remember which one is the absolute requirement, but as far as I can recall 1.1.3+ was okay. If you are not sure what all this mean, you should better stay away. I don't think you can screw something up with my application, but you definately can end up with full restore. ;)
It's a pretty smart wrapper (with the most of constants left at the top of the script), but you've got to be tech savvy and kind of geeky, too. It knows how to use proxy. So, it'd be helpful if you're using T-Zones and don't want to pay any penny more. ;)
I didn't have any spare minute to provide an Installer.app wrap for it. There were few guys that volunteered to do this, however, I'm not aware of any repository that carries such an application. I also included a small code that allows your iPhone to wake up from the sleeping in specific period of time. (No source code for it, but I will include it upon request. Just leave me a comment here.)
The archive has a .plist file that you need to use for starting the keeper.sh when the iPhone boots up. Everything else would be done by keeper.sh and twee.sh. Make sure that you adjust them for your situation. They are pretty simple, but you still need to understand at least something about /bin/sh. ;)

- Change to the directory where you uploaded files.

- Run cp -v ./findme-muchbetter /var/root
- Run cp -v ./pingwifi /var/root
- Run cp -v ./twee.sh /var/root
- Run cp -v ./keeper.sh /var/root
- Check /var/root/twee.sh for your proxy settings (if you are using T-Zones you may want to use the proxy for curl) and for your Twitter username and password.
- Check /var/root/keeper.sh for timing. I found 20 minutes to be good enough. When the phone is sleeping, the updates are coming every 30 minutes (keeping in mind that you set your Mail.app be checked every 15 minutes). When the phone is up, the updates are coming every 20 minutes. You can find the best numbers for yourself.
- Launch keeper launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.qwe3.twee.plist
