GMAT Sentence Correction

There is one thing I can tell you for sure - Sentence Correction (SC) part is going to be the toughest one for the exam.

First of all, it took me 44 days to complete 17 questions. Well, I'm kidding. ;) I just got absorbed by my move from Pasadena to Millbrae, and had no chance to invest time for study during this period. However, after finally sitting down, I found myself scoring 5, which is Below Average by the books scale.

And, you know what, I'm not sure about any single answer in the part. It wasn't a "Russian roulette" for me, but it's more like what sounds right and what's wrong with almost no science and theory behind.

This is something I need to invest the huge amount of time to. But right now I'm turning the page, it's number 107 now and we'll see what it works out to.

Toyota Service

22:09:08: (Libpurple: dnsquery) IP resolved for login.oscar.aol.com 22:09:08: (Libpurple: proxy) Attempting connection to 64.12.161.153 22:09:08: (Libpurple: proxy) Connecting to login.oscar.aol.com:5190 with no proxy 22:09:08: (Libpurple: proxy) Connection in progress

Moving message in Mail.app

I am overwhelmed with many mailboxes from many of my mail accounts. I use to keep each (regular) contact in the separate mailbox, so it's easier for me to find message, when I need them. (I don't need them often though.)

I do have like 5 or 6 regular contacts whom I receiving a lot of messages from (not less then 3-4 from each one daily). Unfortunately, these guys' names are so different, so every time when I'm receiving messages and want to save them, I need to scroll the whole (left-side) list from the top to bottom to find the right person.

I'm getting bothered with that too often now. So, after a quick look around, I found two plugins that can solve my problem. The first one, which looks cooler, is Mail Act-On 2, however, you have to buy it for $24.95 (or you can still get Mail Act-On 1.3.2 for free). The other one is MsgFiler, which is shareware - you can have it for free, but better pay $8 if you find it useful.

So, starting with the MsgFiler (yes, I'm cheapo :). It comes with installer, so you basically don't have to do anything for it. After that, you need to use global keyboard shortcut configure, to setup shortcut for it.

It's pretty easy and described on the site. Make sure you don't misspell Move with MsgFiler (as I did), because you'll not be able to access it then.

Start up Mail.app, select messages, click Command-9 and see the MsgFiler window. You can start typing the name of mailbox, it will react right away and filter the mailboxes by name.

Well, it's easier then to scroll the whole list, but still something could be made better.

Okay, so lets try the other one, which is also free. It also comes with pretty easy installation. But the principle of Mail Act-On is very different. What you do, is to create a rule for every action that you want to have. Like I did, for messages from my brother, linked to o.

That was the first thing that I didn't find very comfortable. Actually, it is comfortable for some cases, but pretty limited in other.

Everything else looks pretty easy though. And much more fancy than MsgFiler.

After spending half an hour with each one, I decided to stick with MsgFiler as for now. It gives me better flexibility, as I don't want to assign a lot of contacts to the key. I know that I'll end up with map of 10 or 15 keys, and it's going to become one more big list to scroll through. I'll miss the fancy look though. ;)

Quick update: As it works out, MsgFiler starts to complain about being unregistered after the 5th message. While $8 is not a lot, I find it to be annoying. I am happy to pay for software, but 5 messages isn't enough for me to find out do I really like it and want it. It'd take a week or even more to finally settle up. (Sorry that I am so slow.) So I'm turning into Mail Act-On back.

Dashboard widgets

I'm giving a quick look at the Mac OS X Dashboard widgets. I knew that they're pretty much HTML + CSS + JavaScript piece of code, with some features on the top, but never worked with them before.

However, even while the world goes into cloud, I like the dashboard widgets and found them to be pretty useful for many types of tasks. Anyway, until the computer is not the browser (it might be so, someday, though), there is a market for desktop software.

As it comes out, you can start doing them pretty easy by using Dashcode. It's still in beta, but gave me a pretty solid impression and made them process very clear for me.

Literally, it takes only few steps to produce sample widget. More then that, you can also test it right within the Dashcode environment. I was prepared for overriding the dashboard into debug mode and placing widgets on the desktop for further development, but using Dashcode makes it much easier. (I'm still going to place some widgets on the Desktop anyway.)

The only thing that Dashcode doesn't make very easy, is how to get the link to the actual widget package. I found it to reside within the project's folder, but it looks like this is something I could just click and get from the menu bar.

Now I'm going to keep the designers and developers busy with nice picture and functionality, so I can continue playing with the widget.

More financial software evaluation (no luck yet)

I took some time this morning to evaluate new "beta" product of Intuit - Financial Life for Mac. You can do this, too, if you have absolutely nothing to do. Otherwise, I suggest you to save some time for more interesting things. Intuit didn't show anything spectacular, yet.

First thing that I mentioned (and I don't know why it was the first one) is that why did they left importing utility (from Quicken for Mac data file) as a separate tool, but not integrated within their Import menu. What is Import supposed to mean then?

It starts a little bit faster than Quicken 2007 for Mac, although the overall navigation experience is worse. I'm running it on the latest MacBook Pro, so the good question now is - WTF, man? Lets go ahead though.

I was greeted with a pretty Scorecard, which started to be boring after few times of seeing it. The information layout seemed a little bit awkward for me - I couldn't find a good visual relationship between screen sections, but logically they look okay.

The special importing utility didn't do a good job and couldn't import my scheduled transactions out of the Quicken file.

The next thing that surprises me every time I'm evaluating some financial software, is why the hell the left side bar never shows the current balance? Like, ($1,000) or +$5,000 or whatever your designers can come up with, but give the freaking numbers.

Isn't it something I might be happy to give a quick look and see without need to click anything? We're running the financial software which is all about numbers.

Intuit introduces tags instead of categories now.

Import tool fucked up again, and imported all categories, that used to be subcategories (you know, Quicken used to have the Category:Subcategory:... type of thing) as a separate tags, with no logic relationship.

And that's a really bad thing. It royally screws up the budget (it looks like it's disabled anyway).

Finally, I don't really care about how do you call them (either categories or tags), but who came with there stupid idea to show --split-- there?!

It looks like the things are getting worse during the road. The screen is frozen every period of time. And sometimes it's not, but it looks to me like it's - I'm click on something, and I get no feedback for my click. As it comes up, the thing I'm clicking on is not clickable at all. (Sounds weird.)

Downloading transactions never worked for me. While it runs the show and simulates that it's doing something, I never was able to clear or reconcile transactions or even download new ones from the bank. (Quicken works well at the same time.)

Tag cloud - something that could be an impressive tool if placed properly. Unfortunately, I found it to be a part of reports, and to be able to see it, I need to navigate to the report, which shows only the tag cloud of categories (now tags).

As it was said, I found budgets disabled in my beta copy. From the other note, I found quick links to current and last month reports to be pretty useful, though having too formal output. (You need to get familiar with that, before being able to understand it from the first sight.)

Transactions - what is the transfer field? That's an absolute overload of the input, that is already overloaded. More on awkward selection of payment source - once I made the selection, why do you want me to see it twice on the screen, taking such a big box of empty space? What a waste.

I didn't find a good indication of future transactions (or upcoming, or planned, or whatever you call it) - the recorded transaction which is posted within the system, but is marked on some future date. The Quicken used to be kind of smart about such transactions, and provided with two balances: one, which is current, and another one, which will be on specific date.

I can continue this for a pretty long time, but that wasn't my intention. I already evaluated the major points of the system, that are critical or important for me. Resolution: didn't pass. Sorry, but this is not something I'm going to change Quicken for. I do have some complains about Quicken, but at least it's good with all these things.

Disclaimer: Please, remember, that my criticism is based on my personal expectations and standards of working with financial software. I'm not doing this professionally, and I don't want to, unless, I find it interesting. (Didn't find it so, yet.) So everything described here, could work well for you, your friend or someone else. But it is not a good fit me, or for someone who thinks and works in the same manner as I do.

What is the 20% of 349,000?

What is the 20% of 349,000?

Progress on the move

I'm still out of the sync because of my move from Pasadena, CA to Millbrae, CA. While it's only 365 miles (~580 km, pretty similar like from Dnepropetrovsk to Kiev - the route that several of my Ukrainian friends use for commuting weekly) from my present place to the new apartment, it takes a huge amount of time to complete it. Hopefully, I can call it a day by the end of next week.

On other note, while I'm not a big fan of TV here in US - during last 3 years, I didn't ever pay for cable. I'm also not going to do this at my new place. However, I happen to watch some shows occassionally. In example, I saw few series of Wife Swap during my first days in US. I don't find this show to be interesting, but it can be an OK time-killer, just in case you need one. Lately, I was pointed to an interesting episode, which featured Stephen Fowler. Here is the link to YouTube of it.

I wasted barely 30 minutes of my weekend time, but I got fun instead, so I'm pretty happy with the result. And you know what, people can call him jerk, but I found him to be a pretty typical character whom you meet often in your life. And what can upset some of you even more, he's got grounds. From the other side, it does not save him from being called "pretentious, ignorant jerk". I don't know him personally, so I'd stay away from putting any marks on him. I used to never trust what you see on TV. It's never the raw truth, somebody has already edited that to some extent.

Somehow, I found that huge part of people who complained the most, are having troubles to understand British people. Well, they are tough. And pretty much rude sometimes. Unless you're ready to fight for you live beliefs, but not be a passive "proud citizen of some country" with a flag in hands, and waiting when somebody will do something to save your ass.

Having your kids overweight, accept that and say that "nobody wants to hear this anymore" was pretty much enough for me to become antipathic to the other-than-Stephen-family. You can do whatever you want to your life and your health. But acceptance of destroying your kids' life and health is the highest level of stupidity. Adding more idiotism on the top, just added some more juice to my criticism of "mid-western" point of view (however, I'm very concerned that this is a real mid-western style).
